Adapin or the generic doxepin is an antidepressant medicine. Doxepin is the main active pharmaceutical ingredient of this drug that belongs to the class of tricyclic anti-depressants. It helps to lessen the reuptake of both serotonin as well as norepinephrine to maintain their level. It’s an FDA approved medication for the treatment of depression and also for anxiety linked with the alcoholism, organic disease. It is very effective in recovering mood and feeling of well-being, tension and helps you to have better sleep. It also improves the energy level.
Doxepin is indicated for the treatment of various types of depression like major depression, manic-depressive disorder, and refractory depression, depression due to alcoholism, mixed depression anxiety, spontaneous endogenous depression, and neurotic depression. In some cases it is also used to treat anxiety, excessive nighttime urination, itching, swelling, panic disorder, craving for smoking, peptic ulcers, insomnia, postprandial hypoglycaemia, posttraumatic stress disorder, chronic pain.
Dosage details of Adapin
Capsules- 10mg, 25mg, 50mg, 75mg, 100mg, 150mg.
Cream- 30g, 45g
Oral solution- 10mg/ml.
The recommended dose for depression or anxiety is 25mg to 300mg per day in three divisions, but don’t increase the dose more than that of 300mg. this medicine become effective in just 2-3 weeks. In case of insomnia the effective dose is 3mg to 6mg per day that you have to take about half an hour before you go to sleep. You take the oral formulation with a glass of water or juice. You can take adapin with or without food, but its consumption with fat containing diet.
In case of missed dose- if you forget to take the dose as per your schedule, take it as soon as you recall, but if you forget until the time for the next dose skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Don’t take a double dose to make up the missed dose.
In case of overdose- if you have taken an excessive dose of adapin take emergency medical help. Symptoms of overdose are hallucinations, thrilling drowsiness, irregular heartbeat, fainting, seizure, breathing problem.
Common effects- sedation, constipation, fatigue, dry mouth, drowsiness, rashes, blurred vision, dizziness, sudden weight alteration, insomnia, gastric reflux, seizures, urinary retention, swelling, photosensitivity, sweating, agitation, nausea, diarrhoea, increased or decrease libido, hypotension, excessive hair loss, delirium, irregular heartbeat, hallucinations, increased appetite, liver toxicity, weakness, low WBC’s count, mental confusion.
Rare side effects- cardiac death, jaundice, cardiomyopathy, leucopoenia, arrhythmia, impaired congestive function, cardiomyopathy, extra movements, agranulocytosis, and suicidal thoughts.
Drugs that can interact with the effect of Adapin are MAO inhibitors, antihistamine drugs (norepinephrine), blood thinners (warfarin), other drugs like clonidine, guanethidine, Tenex, cimetidine, Prozac, Ritalin, oral contraceptives, ACE inhibitors, Zantac, ritonavir, cocaine, sutafed, antithyroid drugs, Demerol. Consumption of these drugs along with the Adapin may not be safe for the patient.
Use of adapin is not safe in case of schizophrenia because Doxepin may intensify the condition.
Use of adapin is not safe in case of Liver disease or kidney disease.
Use of adapin is not safe in case of recent heart attack, narrow angle glaucoma.
Use of adapin in case of medical record of epilepsy, enlarged prostate gland, overactive thyroid, glaucoma, diabetes, blood disorder.
Use if adapin is not safe in case of children under the age of 12 years.
Adapin can make you photosensitive, so be careful while you go outside in the sun.
Do not suddenly interrupt the medication because you may suffer from withdrawal syndrome.
Do not drive and operate any machinery that requires concentration as adapin can cause dizziness.
