Ibuprofen is an active ingredient of Advil tablets which acts by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme. COX is responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandins (these are mediators of pain, inflammation and fever in the body) from arachidonic acid. Ibuprofen blocks the synthesis of prostaglandins by blocking COX enzymes. Prostaglandins are than converted in to thromboxane A2by other enzyme which is responsible for the stimulation of platelet aggregation, leading to the formation of blood clot. It also shows anti-pyretic affect due to its action on the hypothalamus which results in an increased peripheral blood flow and vasodilation.
