Anafranil comprises of clomipramine as the main pharmaceutical ingredient. It’s a psychotropic agent and belongs to a class of tricyclic anti-depressants and used to treat obsessive – compulsive disorder (OCD). It helps to augment the action of norepinephrine and serotonin by inhibiting the reuptake and extending their action.
Anafranil is indicated for the treatment of following problems
Obsessive – compulsive disorder (OCD)
Major depressive disorder
Body Dysmorphic Disorder
Anafranil is available in the market in the formulation of 25mg, 50mg, and 75mg. the dosage information is as follows
For OCD treatment in adults- The initial recommended dose is 25mg once in a day that has to be taken orally by mouth with water. You can increase the dose up to 100 per day at the end of two weeks. To avoid the gastrointestinal infection, it is suggested to take the pill after meal. Take the pill in the evening before you go to sleep.
For OCD treatment in children- The intimal recommended dose for the children between the age group of 10-17 years is 25mg per day. Decrease or increase the dose if necessary only after discussing it with the doctor.
In case of missed dose- if you missed to take the dose of Anafranil, take it as soon you remember but if the time is about to near the next dose skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Don’t take two doses at the same time to make up the missed dose and also don’t take the missed dose in the morning if you missed to take the dose in last night.
In case of order dose- if you suspect the symptoms of overdose seek medical help. Symptoms of overdose are irregular heartbeat, seizures, dizziness, loss of consciousness, delirium, fainting.
Common side effects – dry mouth, vomiting, drowsiness, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, nervousness, constipation, reduced interest in sexual activity, memory loss, headache, change in appetite, nasal congestion.
Severe side effects- uncontrolled body movement, shakiness, seizures, irregular heartbeat, urination problem, hallucination, shakiness, problematic breathing, muscular stiffness, weakness, tiredness, fever, sore throat.
All the above mentioned adverse effects are temporary and if persists for longer duration seek medical help. These effects vary from patient to patient.
Some of the drugs that can interact with the effect of this medicine are amphetamine, alcohol containing drugs, anticholinergic drugs (atropine), barbiturates (phenobarbital), bupropion, benzodiazepine (diazepam), butyrophenones, cimetidine, carbamazepine, codeine, ciprofloxacin, clonidine, duloxetine, estrogen, ephedrine, ketoconazole, lithium, lansoprazole, MAO inhibitors, methyldopa, metoclopramide, methylphenidate, NSAID’s, olanzaprine, phenothiazine, phenylephrine, Pimozide, phenytoin, quinidine, quinine, rifabutin, rabeprazole, Rifampin, tramadol, Tamoxifen, Valporic acid. All these drugs are not safe to be taken along with that of the Anafranil.
It’s not safe to use Anafranil in case the patient is allergic to Clomipramine.
It’s not safe to use Anafranil in case of congestive heart failure, severe blood disorders, glaucoma, liver damage, kidney damage, and stroke.
It’s not safe to use Anafranil in case you are already having MAO inhibitor.
It’s not safe to use Anafranil in case of recent myocardial infarction.
It may affect the growth of the unborn child so be careful in case of pregnancy, discuss it with your doctor prior having this medicine.
It may pass through the breast milk and can affect the newborn baby, so discuss it with your doctor prior having it in case of lactation.
