Its main pharmaceutical ingredient is nortriptyline that belongs to the class of tricyclic anti-depressants and acts by affecting the balance of certain chemicals in the brain. It can also be used to treat peripheral neuropathy, anxiety, panic disorder. It helps to enhance the neurotransmitter reuptake inhibitor. It also helps to increase the level of norepinephrine and serotonin and helps to inhibit the action of acetylcholine.
How should I use Aventyl?
Adult dose- The recommended dose is 5mgthat has to be taken three times a day and can increase the total dose up to 100mg per day. It’s an oral formulation so it is suggested to take the pill with a glass of water.
In a case of misseddose
In a case of missed dose take it as soon as you remember but if the time is almost about to the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dose but don’t take extra dose to cover up with the missed dose.
In a case of overdose
In a case of overdose seek medical help. Symptoms of overdose are hallucination, seizures, irregular heartbeat, breathing problem, severe headache.
What are the other drug interactions?
Drug that interacts with the use of this medicine are arsenic trioxide, cisapride, linezolid, halofantrine, methylene blue, MAO inhibitors, perphenazine, chlorpromazine, Thioridiazine, probucol, Pimozide, procarbazine, St. John’s wort, sparfloxacin, Ziprasidon, atropine drugs, barbiturates, anti-diabetic drugs.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects – drowsiness, dizziness, excitement, dry mouth, headache, nausea, impotence, nightmare, light sensitivity, pupil dilation, stomach disturbance, weakness, tiredness, sweating, vomiting, sudden weight loss.
Severe side effects- loss of interest in sex, change in sex drive, pain in the chest, constipation, confusion, irregular heartbeat, fainting, problematic urination, fever, hallucination, impulsive behaviour, muscular spasm, mood swing, panic attack, jaundice like symptoms, dizziness, seizures, ringing in the ears, sore throat.
Allergic effects- skin rashes, itching, hives, chest congestion, problematic breathing, swelling of the lips, mouth, face, tongue.
