Lexapro is an antidepressant medicine used to treat anxiety and major depressive disorder. It’s a generic Escitalopram that belongs to the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s).  It helps to affect the chemical present in the brain that may become unbalanced and leads to anxiety or depression. Lexapro contains Escitalopram as the main pharmaceutical ingredient and can be used for the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults. It belongs to the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and can also be used to treat generalized anxiety. It helps to restore the chemical balance in the brain by improving the serotonin level of the brain. Serotonin is the main chemical that mainly influences the brain. It helps to improve depression caused by the imbalance of the serotonin level and affects the ability to work, sleep and enjoy various moments of the life.

How to take, how much to take and when to take?

Prior initiating the treatment read all the instructions mentioned in the patient’s guide. The recommended initial dose for adults is 10mg per day or once in a day. Don’t increase or decrease the dose without discussing it with the doctor. It is preferable to take the medicine in the morning or the evening so that it is easy to remember. You can take it with food or without food.

If in the case you missed taking the dose of Lexapro takes it as soon as you remember but if the time is about to the next dose skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule.

In the case of overdose, you may feel like convulsions, coma, hypotension, dizziness, insomnia, nausea, vomiting. If you feel any of these symptoms, seek emergency medical help.

What are the conflicting effects of Lexapro?

Common side effects- Nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, drowsiness, change in sexual desire, excessive sweating, heartburn, abdominal pain, dry mouth, extreme tiredness, augmented appetite, flu-like symptoms.

Rare side effects-

Over excitement, hallucinations, chill, fever, mental confusion, irregular heartbeat, muscular stiffness, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, worsening of depression, restlessness, agitation, panic attack, insomnia, irritability, aggressiveness, impulsive behaviour, mania, mood swing.

All these effects vary from patient to patient. If these effects persist for more than the expected time seek for the medical help.

What are the other drug interactions?

When two or more drugs are administered at a time they may cause severe interactions. To avoid the harmful effects of interactions be careful while having the Lexapro along with the following drugs

  • St John’s wort

  • MAO inhibitors like Isocarboxazid, Phenelzine.

  • Pain killers like Ultram, tramadol.

  • Drugs for heartburn like Cimetidine.

  • Blood thinners like Coumadin.

  • Other SSRI’s like Celexa.

  • Anti- seizure like Tagretol.

  • NSAID’s like Naproxen, Ibuprofen.

  • Drugs to treat mental illness like Lithium.

  • Cardiac tonic like Digoxin, digitalis.

  • Migraine treatment drugs like Eletriptan.

  • Other drugs like anti-fungal, anti-viral and antibiotics.

What are the Safety measures?

  • Avoid driving and operating heavy machinery while having the treatment with this medicine as it can cause dizziness, affect judgement power, thinking.

  • Alcohol drinking along with this medicine increases the risk of getting side effects.

  • Avoid the use of Lexapro in case of pregnancy as it can affect the growth of the unborn baby.

  • Avoid the use of Lexapro in case of breast – feeding too, as it can pass into the breast milk and may harm the new-born child.

  • Discuss with your doctor prior having this medicine if you have a medical record of hypertension, mania, bipolar disorder, stroke, low sodium level, seizures, bleeding disorder.

  • In the case of allergic to Escitalopram do not use this medicine, go for alternate treatment.

  • In the case you are having Pimozide don’t use Lexapro.

  • In the case you have taken MAO inhibitors in the last 2 weeks don’t use this medicine.
