Paxil is the commonly used FDA approved antidepressant medication. Its generic form is paroxetine as it contains Paroxetine as the main ingredient for the treatment of major depression, panic disorder, obsessive- compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Paroxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor that affects the neurotransmitters that help in the co-ordination of the nerves. The disturbance in the level of neurotransmitters is responsible for the cause of depression. It is also used to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder, chronic headaches, bipolar disorder and tingling in body parts. Paxil helps to maintain the equilibrium by preventing the serotonin reabsorption.

  • If have suicidal thoughts after having this medication, discuss it with your physician.

  • If you are allergic to Paroxetine or any other SSRI’s avoid use of this medication.

Common side effects- headache, weakness, dizziness, lack of concentration, forgetfulness, nervousness, mental confusion, tiredness, vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea,  gastric, heartburn, abdominal pain, alteration in taste buds, reduced appetite, sudden weight loss, change in sex drive, sweating, dry mouth, light sensitivity, yawning in excess, throat congestion, muscular pain, back pain, swelling of the joint, tenderness in bones, muscular weakness, facial flushing, sore teeth and gums, strange dreams, painful menstruation.

Serious side effects- blurred vision, fainting, hallucination, irregular heartbeat, chest congestion, problematic breathing, seizures, abnormal bleeding, red spots on the skin, fever, chills, cough, unsteady walking, muscular twitching, numbness, excessive urination, Painful erection.

  • Blood thinners – warfarin, Coumadin.

  • Drugs for migraine treatment – Eletriptan, Almotriptan, Frovatriptan.

  • Anti-seizures drugs – Phenytoin, phenobarbital.

  • Other anti-depressants - Amitriptyline, Clomipramine, Amoxapine.

  • NSAID’s – Celecoxib, Naproxen, Ibuprofen.

  • Other drugs – antihistamines, diuretics, codeine- containing drugs.

  • Antibiotics – Rifampin, isoniazid.

What is the dosage of Paxil?

Paxil is available in the market on the strength of 10mg, 20mg, 30mg and 40mg. it is advisable to take the medicine once in a day preferable morning or evening. Take the medicine with food to avoid the stomach disturbance. Take the whole tablet with water and make sure don’t crush or chew the medicine.

For Major-depressive disorder- The recommended dose is 20mg – 50mg.

For Obsessive-compulsive disorder- the recommended dose is 40mg.

For panic disorder- the recommended dose is 10mg to 60mg.

For social anxiety disorder – the recommended dose is 20mg to 60mg.

What happens if I miss the dose of Paxil?

If you forget to take the dose at scheduled time take it as soon as possible, but if the time is about to the next dose skip the missed one and follow the regular schedule. Don’t take a double dose to compensate with the missed dose.

What happens in the case of overdose?

Symptoms of overdose are extreme fatigue, sleepiness, coma, mental confusion, twitching, shakiness, irregular heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, seizures, fainting, blurred vision, unusual bleeding, loss of energy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, jaundice like symptoms, flu-like symptoms, aggressive behaviour, muscular pain, weakness, darkening of urine, urinating problem, diarrhoea, excessive excitement, sweating, fever.
