Prozac is an anti-depressant medicine used for the treatment of depression contains Fluoxetine as the main pharmaceutical ingredient. Fluoxetine belongs to the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and is used for the treatment of major depression, panic disorder and obsessive- compulsive disorder. Fluoxetine acts by inhibiting the absorption of neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. It helps to regulate the amount of serotonin in the brain that results in the better and stable mood. It also helps to relieve the symptoms of mood swing, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, bloating, irritability, tenderness in the breast.
Indication of Prozac
Prozac medicine is prescribed for the management of
Acute and maintenance treatment of MDD (Major depressive disorder).
Acute and maintenance disorder of Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
Acute treatment of panic disorder.
What is the usual dosage of Prozac?
The dosage detail of the patient is decided as per the patient condition, drug response and age of eth patient. Don’t increase or decrease the dose by yourself. The dosage regimen details are
Major Depressive disorder (MDD) – the initial recommended dose for adult is 20mg once in day preferably in the morning. For the children between the age group of 8-18 years is 10mg per day.
Obsessive Compulsive disorder (OCD) – The initial recommended dose for adults is 20mg once in a day preferably in the morning and for the children (7-17 years) the initial dose is 10mg once in a day.
Panic disorder- the recommended initial dose is 10mg once in a day.
You have to take the Prozac tablet with a glass of water and you can take it with or without food but follow the same practice every day.
In case of missed dose- in case you missed to take the dose of Prozac as per the schedule, take it as soon as you remember but if you forget till the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule.
In case of overdose- don’t take more than that of the recommended dose as overdosing is harmful. In case of overdose you may feel symptoms like mental confusion, shakiness, impassiveness, nervousness, uncontrolled body movement, unsteadiness, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, fever, fainting, and coma. Contact emergency medical help in case of overdosing.
Side effects of Prozac are
Common side effects – Nausea, dry mouth, nervousness, sore throat, drowsiness, weakness, uncontrolled body movements, loss of appetite, sudden weight loss, excessive sweating.
Severe side effects- Skin rashes, hives, fever, pain in the joints, problem in swallowing, problem in breathing, fever, mental confusion, severe muscular stiffness, swelling (face, lips, eyes, thoughts, tongue, eyes, hands, feet, ankle, legs), hallucinations, seizures.
In case of worsening of side effects, seek medical help.
Warnings and precautions
Avoid the use of Prozac medicine in case of allergic to Fluoxetine and other components of this medicine.
Do not take Prozac if you had MAO drug in last 2-3 weeks, there should be at least difference of 5 weeks.
Use of Prozac is not safe in case you are taking Pimozide or Thioridazine.
Prior having the Prozac, discussit with your doctor if you have medical record of disease like cardiac problem, liver dysfunction, renal impairment, diabetes, hypertension, mania, bipolar disorder, glaucoma, stroke, bleeding disorder, seizures, low level of sodium in the blood.
Avoid driving and operating any heavy machinery that requires alertness as this medicine causes dizziness or lack of concentration.
Avoid alcohol consumption along with the Prozac treatment.
Use of Prozac is not safe in case of pregnancy as this medicine can harm the unborn child.
Use of Prozac is also not in case of lactation as it can pass through the breast milk.
