Cataflam consists of diclofenac potassium which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. It is used to treat the pain by reducing the substances in the body that cause pain and inflammation. It is also used to treat the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. It is also supportive in the lower abdomen pain related to the menstruation cycle. It is also used in the treatment of muscle pain, dental pain, backaches and inflammation.

Diclofenac potassium is an active compound of Cataflam which is used in the treatment of pain and inflammation. Diclofenac potassium acts by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzyme. Cyclooxygenase enzyme is responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandins (pain inducing chemicals). Diclofenac blocks the synthesis of prostaglandins by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzyme. It also acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA synthesis which results in bacterial cell death. Diclofenac single dose acts for 6-8 hours. It is also noted that it inhibits the lipoxygenase enzymes and causes reduction in the formation of leukotrienes. As it acts through various mechanisms so it is considered as most potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Some other mechanisms of action of Diclofenac include:

  • It blocks the voltage dependent sodium channels.

  • It also blocks the acid-sensing ion channels.

Uses of Cataflam:

Diclofenac potassium is an anti-inflammatory drug which is used to treat various mild to moderate painful conditions such as backaches, muscle aches, sports injuries, joint stiffness caused by arthritis and pain related to the menstrual cycle. Diclofenac is also useful in gout attacks.

Cataflam should not be taken with the drugs:

Diclofenac is not indicated along with the medicines like:

  • Captopril, Lisinopril and other ACE inhibitors

  • Aliskiren

  • Losartan, valsartan and other angiotensin II receptor blockers

  • Cidofovir

  • Methotrexate

  • Furosemide and other diuretics

  • Prednisolone and other corticosteroids

  • Anti-platelet drugs such as clopidogrel

  • Blood thinners such as warfarin and enoxaparin

  • Do not take this medicine along with other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Contraindications for Cataflam:

Diclofenac is not indicated to use in the following conditions:

  • Avoid the use of Diclofenac if you are allergic to NSAIDS like ibuprofen, Celecoxib etc.

  • Do not use this medicine if you have a history of asthma, bleeding or clotting problems, nasal polyps, heart disease and high blood pressure.

  • This medicine is not indicated to use if you have liver disease, ulcer in stomach or intestine.

Storage of Cataflam:

  • Cataflam is to be stored at room temperature below 25 degree C.

  • Protect this medicine from heat, moisture and direct light.

  • Store it in a cool and dry place.

  • Keep out of the reach of children and pets.

 

Doses:

Dose of Cataflam:

Cataflam is to be taken at a dose of 50 mg three times a day along with water. Maximum dosing frequency of Cataflam is three time in a day.

In case you missed any dose of Cataflam:

If you forget to take the dose of Cataflam, you may be able to take the missed dose when you remember. Don't take a double dose to make up for the missed dose as multiple doses can lead to excess drug in the body which can be dangerous.

Over Dose of Cataflam:

Consult with your Doctor immediately in case of overdose of Cataflam as side effects of Cataflam is more severe than that of the other drugs. The symptoms of overdose include diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea or vomiting.

There are some side effects of Cataflam which may include:

  • Nausea

  • Diarrhea

  • Constipation

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

  • Upset stomach

Precautions:

Precautions for Cataflam:

Some precautionary measures while using Cataflam are as follows:

  • Do not drive or do any work which requires alertness as this medicine may cause dizziness.

  • Do not use Cataflam along with alcohol it may increase the risk of stomach bleeding.

  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure as this medicine may make you more sensitive to sun.

  • Avoid breastfeeding as this medicine passes in to breast milk.
