Dostinex is a very useful medication in stopping milk secretion or lactation in some conditions like abortion, stillbirth and all.
It can also be used in the diseases that are developed due to increased synthesis of hormone prolactine.
It is also used in a condition called prolactinomoas caused by pituitary gland tumour occurs due to increased production of prolactine.
Dostinex is a dopamine receptor agonist. Cabergoline is the active ingredient of this drug that is an ergot derivative. Cabergoline is approved by FDA. It exhibits the similar functions in the brain as Dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter of brain.
This medication works by blocking the production of Prolactine that is responsible for milk production in pregnancy or breast-feeding women. It is also helps in maintaining a regular menstrual cycle and fertility.
Dostinex is supplied in tablet form. It should be taken with a glass of water. Dosage and duration should always decided by your health care provider.
Dosage varies depending on the patient’s age, sex and needs. The recommended dose of this medication is 1 gm Cabergoline at a single dose on the first day of the delivery. On the other hand, to decrease the prolactine synthesis in adults, the most recommended dose is 0.5mg in each week. The dosage can be adjusted as per the need in the next few weeks.
Like other medications, Dostinex also have some side effects, which occurs in only 1% of people. Some of the common side effects of this medication are:

- Breast pain or tendeness

Missed dose and Overdose:
You should always consult with your doctor in case of missed dose and overdose to avoid serious complications. If you take an overdose, call your doctor immediately and ask for medical assistance.
You should always store Dostinex at room temperature below 30 Degree C. This medication is should be kept out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use expired medication. Dispose the unused pills in a proper ways.
