Drotaverine is an active component of Drotaspa. Drotaverine is also known as Drotaverin. It is an anti-spasmodic drug which is used to treat the acute to chronic muscle spasm. It acts by inhibiting the phosphodiesterase type 4 enzymes. It does not have any anti-cholinergic activity. It shows the analgesic effect by inhibiting the phosphodiesterase type 4 enzymes which elevates the level of cyclic adenosine monophosphate. It causes smooth muscle relaxation and hence pain is relieved.
Uses of Drotaspa:
It is used in the treatment of muscle spasm. It is used in both smooth muscle spasm and skeletal muscle spasm. It may be also used in the treatment of renal colic. In a recent study it is found that it also accelerates labor. It is also used in the treatment of functional bowel disorders.

Contraindications for Drotaspa:
Drotaverine must be used with great caution if not avoided totally in individuals with chronic and or severe liver or kidney dysfunction as well as in the elderly and children.
Caution is mandated in patients of Inflammatory bowel disease
Careful and judicious use under medical consultation is warranted in patients with heart failure, arrhythmia and coronary bypass graft surgery.
Storage of Drotaspa:
Drotaspa is to be stored at room temperature below 25 degree C.
Protect this medicine from heat, moisture and direct light.
Store it in a cool and dry place.
Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
Drotaverine is generally prescribed as 40 mg to 80 mg three times a day. In case of children who are between three to six years of age the dosage is 20 mg three to four times a day. Children who are more than six years of age could be given a dose of 40 mg three times a day. The medication is available as tablet and could be consumed with or without meal.
In case you missed any dose of Drotaspa:
If you forget to take the dose of Drotaspa, you may be able to take the missed dose when you remember. Don't take a double dose to make up for the missed dose as multiple doses can lead to excess drug in the body which can be dangerous.
Over Dose of Drotaspa:
Consult with your Doctor immediately in case of overdose of Drotaspa as side effects of Drotaspa is more severe than that of the other drugs. The symptoms of overdose include diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea or vomiting.
What are the adverse events reported with Drotaverine
Drotaverine is believed to increase the tendency and incidence of headaches and dizziness in patient. Drotaverine has also resulted in nausea in many patients and an increased level of constipation was also reported as side effects.

Precaution is required if the medication is given during the pregnancy or when you are trying to become pregnant.
Caution is required if you are breast feeding
In case of severe renal impairment talk to your doctor before you start taking the medication.
In case of any hepatic disorder which is mild to severe in nature talk to your doctor immediately.
