Imitrex or the generic Sumatriptan is used for the cure of migraine. It benefits in relieving headache, and other migraine symptoms like vomiting, nausea, light sensitivity. Its main active pharmaceutical ingredient is Sumatriptan that belongs to the class of triptan. It shows its effect on the chemical present in the brain that result in the narrowing of the blood vessels in the brain. Triptan is a selective serotonin receptor agonist. Sumatriptan helps in the stimulation of serotonin receptors in the brain that results in the contraction of blood vessels and reduces transmission of the signals that causes pain. As a result of all this Sumatriptan helps to inhibit the migraine progression.
Taking Imitrex medicine
Formulation- Imitrex is available in the market in three formulation viz. Tablet ( 25mg, 50mg, 100mg); Intra-nasal solution (5mg, 20mg); Injection solution (4mg/0.5ml,6mg/0.5ml).
Dosage – For tablet- The recommended initial dose is 25mg – 100mg and can be increased up to 200mg per day. For intranasal- the recommended initial dose is 5mg – 20mg and can increased up to 40mg per day. For Injection solution – the recommended initial dose is 4mg – 6mg and the maximum dose is 6mg.
How to use – read all the instructions carefully mentioned in the leaflet guide. You can take the tablet formulation by mouth with or without food during the initial phase of migraine. If headache returns back take another dose after the two hours of the first dose.
Missed dose- in case of Imitrex missed dose is not possible as you only have to take the medicine when the pain appears.
Overdose- Don’t exceeds more than 200mg per day. In case of overdose contact emergency medical help. Symptoms of overdose are skin rashes, tremor, scabs, redness of the skin, scaling skin, weakness, problematic breathing, coordination problem, blurred vision, convulsions.
Side effects of Imitrex
Imitrex is safe to use but may cause some side effects. These side effects vary from person to person. Rare side effects caused by Imitrex are tremor of coronary arteries, alteration in heart rhythm, cardiac problem, and pain at the site of the injection, sensation of tingling, warmth, cold, congestion and pressure, facial flushing, chest congestion, dizziness, fatigue, drowsiness, weakness, neck stiffness, change in the taste. Allergic effects like wheezing, problematic breathing, itching, hives, and anaphylactic shock.
Special safety measures
Avoid intake of Sumatriptan at the same time of the MAO inhibitors. There should be at least two week difference between the dose of a MAO inhibitor and Imitrex.
If you are having ergot containing medicine, there should be a difference of at least 24 hours with the dose of Imitrex.
Imitrex is not safe for patient of coronary heart disease, angina and arterial blockage.
Imitrex is not safe in case of patient having the problem of uncontrolled hypertension.
Imitrex is not safe to be used intravenously.
Imitrex is not safe to be used in case of epilepsy, seizures and severe liver disease.
Imitrex is not safe to be used in case of allergic to Sumatriptan.
Drugs that can interact with the effect of Sumatriptan are ergotamine, MAO inhibitors, 5-HT1 agonist medicines, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors like Escitalopram, Paroxetine; SNRI’s like Venlafaxine, Duloxetine; antibiotics like Clarithromycin, telithromycin; Anti-depressants like Clomipramine, imipramine; Anti-fungal drugs like Ketoconazole, Itraconazole; Antiviral drugs like Nelfinavir, Indinavir.
