Generic Latoprost belong to the class of medicine known as prostaglandin analogue. The medicine is highly demanded for treating glaucoma that is an eye disease in which pressure inside the eye is increased. In addition to this, Latoprost is also in use for treating ocular hypertension.
Generic Latoprost is manufactured by various pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer. It is available in the market under the brand name of Xalatan.
Active and Inactive ingredients of Latoprost eye drops:
Active ingredient: Xalatan
Inactive ingredient: sodium chloride, sodium di-hydrogen phosphate monohydrate, disodium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous and water for injection.
Storage condition of Latoprost eye drops:
The unopened bottle should be stored at a temperature that should not be more than 25 degree centigrade, in a refrigerator.
Opened bottled should be used for 6 weeks. Still medicine is present after that duration, it should be properly discarded.
The eye drops should be kept away from reach of children and pets.
Mechanism of action:
Generic Latoprost works by increasing the drainage of aqueous humour out of the eye ball in the eye. This eye drops has similar function as that of naturally found prostaglandin, so this synthetic version acts on the same receptors when applied by the patient and thus pressure inside the eye gets decreased.
Generic Latoprost is used to treat increased pressure within eye. It is used to treat ocular hypertension and glaucoma.
Following side effects can be experienced by the patient when Latoprost eye drop is applied by the patient:
Redness of eye
Pain in muscle/joint
Rapid vision change
Brown discoloration of iris
Increased sensitivity to light
Changes in the eyelash number/colour/length/thickness
Additionally, if the patient feels any other changes after using the medicine, then they should contact to the doctor.
Generic Latoprost might interact with some other medicine. It is therefore, advisable to keep a list of all medicines and share that list with your doctor. The patient should not increase or decrease the dose that is recommended by the doctor. In case the patient is using any prescribed medicine or non-prescribed medicine than they should tell to the doctor about that before the treatment with the eye drops begins.
Generic Latoprost should be used once in a day, usually in the evening.
In case the patient misses the dose, then they should apply it as soon as it is remembered. If it is time for the next dose, then they should skip the missed dose and apply the medicine as per their schedule. The patient should not apply double dose of the medicine to make up for the missed one.
If overdose of the medicine is suspected by the patient, then they should consult to the doctor immediately.
Before using the generic Latoprost eye drops, the patient should let their doctor know in case they are allergic to this medicine or any other medicine of same class or any ingredients of the medicine.
To avoid contamination, do not touch the tip of the dropper.

The medicine makes the patient feel blurred vision. Therefore, they should avoid work that needs alertness and clear vision.
The medicine might pass to the breast milk of the nursing patient and can harm the infant. Therefore, the patient should always consult to the doctor before using it.
Pregnant patient should take the medicine only if prescribed by the doctor.
