Generic Maxalt is an effective medicine that belongs to the class of drugs known as triptans. It is highly appreciated and demanded medicine for treating migraine headache. This medicine is available in different strength such as 5 mg and 10 mg. The medicine got approval from the FDA on June 1998.
Generic Maxalt works by narrowing the blood vessels. These blood vessels are present around the brain. The medicine reduces the substance in the body that is responsible for causing pain, nausea, headache, sensitivity to sound and light.
Maxalt is used to treat pain that has already started and is not used for the treatment for headache that causes loss of movement on one side of the body or any other type of headache.
Generic Maxalt contains rizatriptain in its benzoate form. This appears as white to off-white in colour. It is soluble in water at 25°C. It has an empirical formula of C15H19N5•C7H6O2 and a molecular weight of 269.4.
Generic Maxalt contain various inactive ingredients such as lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, ferric oxide, pregelatinized starch and magnesium stearate.
The tablets of Maxalt are available in blister packing that is wrapped in the aluminium pouch. The patient should remove the medicine from packing only when you are ready to use. When the patient is ready for the dose, they have to peel off the pouch and using dry & clean hand, need to keep the tablet on the tongue and then the tablet gets dissolve and swallowed along with saliva.
Mechanism of action:
Generic Maxalt works by reducing the widen blood vessels so that it can come in its regular size. This alleviates the pain. The medicine is known to block the release of chemical called as serotonin that is released from the nerve ending. This chemical is responsible for pain and other signs of migraine.

Coronary artery vasospasm
Transient myocardial ischemia
Sweating in the skin

St. John’s wort
Based on the severity of the condition, the dose is decided. In general, the normal recommended dose for normal adult is 5 mg or 10 mg for treating acute cases of migraine. Initially, a low dose should be given to the patient. If required, the dose can further ne increased to 10 mg. The maximum recommended dose in a day should not exceed 30 mg.
Just in case the patient needs a second dose of the medicine, it should be given only after 2 hours of first dose.
In case of paediatric patient- 5 mg for less than 40 kg of body weight
-10 mg for more than 40 kg of body weight
In case the patient misses the dose, then they should consult to the doctor.
If overdose of the medicine is suspected then, the patient should consult to the doctor as early as possible.
Before taking generic Maxalt, the patient should tell to the doctor in case they are allergic to this medicine.
Generic Maxalt also contain different types of inactive ingredient that might also be a reason of allergic reaction. Therefore, the patient should check the entire ingredient properly before using it.
If the patient has any medical record of disease such as heart disease, blood circulation problem, uncontrolled high blood pressure ischemic bowel disease, heart stroke, improper or lack of blood supply to the heart, etc. Then they should consult to the doctor before taking the medicine.
Maxalt will not reduce the number of attack of migraine or prevent headache.
Maxalt should not be used by the pregnant or nursing patient as it may pass to the breast milk and can harm the infant.
The medicine should not be given to anyone less than 18 years of age.
