Generic Neosporin eye ointment or neomycin-sulfate consists of three different antibiotics, namely; neomycin, polymyxin and bacitracin that work together to inhibit bacterial growth. It is used to treat eye infections. The medicine is used to treat only bacterial eye infections.
The three antibiotics, neomycin, polymyxin and bacitracin are sterile antimicrobial ointment that is intended for ophthalmic use. Generic Neosporin contains neomycin sulphate, polymyxin B sulphate and bacitracin zinc.
Neomycin sulphate is the sulphate salt of neomycin B and C and it produced by the growth of Streptomyces fradiae. Polymyxin B sulphate is the sulphate salt of polymyxin B1 and B2 that is produced by the growth of Bacillus polymyxa. Bacitracin zinc is the zinc salt of bacitracin that is produced by the growth of an organism of the licheniformis group of Bacillus subtilis.
Generic Neosporin eye ointment should be stored at room temperature that varies from 15-30 degree centigrade. You should protect the ointment from light, moisture and heat as these physical parameters might destroy the effectiveness of the medicine. This might lead to altered or delayed result. Keep the ointment in such a place that is not reachable for children and pets. Check the expiry date of the medicine before using it. In case the medicine is expired, discard it properly with the help of company that is engaged in such work.

Some of the drugs that might interact with generic eye ointment include Tubocurarine, Pancuronium, etc. Some other drugs might also interact with this medicine and can the desired result. Therefore, you should always keep a list of all medicine that you use and share the list with your doctor when you consult. Do not increase or decrease the dose than recommended by the doctor. If you are using any prescribed medicine or non-prescribed medicine or herbal product, then tell your doctor proactively about it.
In general, the recommended dose for applying this eye ointment is at an interval of 3 or 4 hours for 7 to 10 days. Apply the ointment as a thin layer into the lower eye lid. Based on the severity of the condition, dose is decided. Always consult the doctor for exact dose of the ointment.
If the patient misses the dose, then it should be applied as soon as remembered. However, if it is time for next scheduled dose, then skip the missed dose and follow the dose as per next scheduled dose. In any case, double dose of ointment should not be applied. Also, do not apply any other ointment to catch up for the missed dose.
If you suspects for overdose of the ointment, then you should consult to the doctor as early as possible.
Before using generic Neosporin Eye ointment, you should tell to the doctor if they have allergy with this medicine or any other medicine of same class. Some of the other medicine of same class is gentamicin, kanamycin, etc.
