What is Osteoporosis and how it affects health?

The symptoms of Osteoporosis are not generally noticed by the sufferer till he or she has a fracture. Though, some alarming signs that may be early signs of this disorder include:

  • Backache
  • Abnormal sign of loosing height with stooped posture
  • Fractures of the spine, wrist, or hip
  • Post menopause females

Osteoporosis is type of bone diseases which makes bone thinner enough to easily get painful fractures. The risk factors for osteoporosis are raised with following factors:

  • growing age,
  • in females,
  • low body weight,
  • low sex hormones or menopause,
  • smoking, and
  • as adverse effect of some medications.

For prevention and treatment of this bone disease patient are generally prescribed with calcium and vitamin D, osteoporosis medications along with few physical exercises. These medications slow the rate of bone loss and/ or increase bone thickness. We provide both types of medications for the treatment of osteoporosis. Medicine for treatment and prevention include Bisphosphonates, alendronate, ibandronate, risedronate and zoledronic acid etc. Some naturally occurring hormones are also prescribed that helps regulate calcium levels in the body. Pain relievers such as NSAID medicines can be used to manage pain associated with Osteoporosis.
