Rhinocort nasal spray belongs to the class of drug known as corticosteroids. It is an important spray that is used in the prevention and treatment of seasonal and year-around allergy symptoms. This plays an important role in treating stuffy or runny nose, itchy eyes, nose, throat and sneezing. The medicine functions by reducing inflammation in the nasal passages.

Rhinocort nasal spray contains budesonide as active ingredient. In addition to active ingredient, it also contains various inactive ingredients such as microcrystalline cellulose carboxy methyl cellulose, dextrose anhydrous, disodium edetate, polysorbate 80, potassium sorbate and purified water.

Rhinocort nasal spray should be stored at a temperature that varies from 20-25 degree centigrade. The user should always keep the protective cap of the spray in place after using it. The container of nasal spray should always be kept in upright position. The nasal spray should be kept at a place where children and pets should not reach.

 Mechanism of action:

Rhinocort nasal spray works by reducing the swelling in the nasal passages. The active ingredient, budesonide, enters directly to the lining of the nose.


Rhinocort nasal spray is used to treat allergy rhinitis. Besides, it is also used to treat and prevent nasal polyps.

How to use:

  • The patient should use this spray for nose, usually 1 or 2 sprays in each nostril. Care should be taken by the patient for not getting this medicine into the eyes.

  • The user should shake the container before using it or if not used for two or more days. So, before each use, container should be shake.
    In addition to this, the spray pump should be cleaned properly if not used for 14 or more days.

  • At first, plastic cap should be removed for using the spray.

  • Using finger, one nostril is closed by pressing it.

  • The head of the user should be slightly in forward position and the bottle is kept upright. After which, nasal applicator is inserted into the other nostril.

  • The pump is pressed down gently so as to deliver the suggested or recommended number of sprays while gently breathing in through nose and the mouth is kept closed.

  • After spraying, the applicator tip is removed and the user should tilt their head back for few seconds. This is required for spreading the medicine over the back of the nose.  

  • Same process is repeated for the other nostril as well.

  • The applicator is wiped out and the plastic cap is replaced. Care should be taken by the patient for not blowing nose for 15 minutes after using medicine.

Side effects:

The patient might experience side effects after using Rhinocort nasal spray such as:

  • Irritation

  • Sore throat

  • Cough

  • Bronchospasm

  • Nasal bleeding

  • Upper respiratory tract

  • Increased intraocular pressure

  • Cataract

  • Glaucoma

  • Unpleasant taste/smell

  • Unusual tiredness

  • Weight loss

  • Headache

  • Increased thirst

Drug interactions:

Some of the drugs that might interact with Rhinocort nasal spray are:

  • Ketoconazole

  • Itraconazole

  • Ritonavir

  • Atazanavir

  • Clarithromycin

  • Indinavir

  • Telithromycin

This is not the complete list of drug interactions. Some other drugs might also react with this nasal spray. Therefore, the patient should always share the name of all drugs that they are using with their doctor.


  • For adults and child of age 6 years and above- 1 spray in each nostril, once in a day daily

  • For individuals of age above 12 years- 4 sprays in each nostril, once in a day

  • For individual of age less than 12 years- 2 sprays per nostril, once in day daily.

However, the patient should always consult to the doctor once before using this nasal spray.

Missed dose:

In case of missed dose, the patient should consult to the doctor as early as possible.


If overdose of the medicine is suspected, then the patient should contact to their health care provider.


  • Before using Rhinocort nasal spray, the patient should tell to the doctor f they are allergic to it or have any other allergy.

  • Sometimes the inactive ingredient present in the medicine might also cause allergic reaction to some of the users. Therefore, the user should always check the entire ingredient properly before using it.

  • Prior using this medicine, the patient should tell to the doctor if they have any medical history of eye problem such as cataract, glaucoma, nose problem, etc.

  • If the patient is using any prescribed drug, non-prescribed drug or herbal products, then they should tell to the doctor before using it.

  • Pregnant and nursing patient should always consult to the doctor before using Rhinocort nasal spray.
