Tizanidine is a centrally acting alpha-2-adrenergic agonist that is given for management of spasticity. Tizanidine is an agonist at 2-adrenergic receptor sites and presumably reduces spasticity by increasing presynaptic inhibition of motor neurons. This medication has no effect on skeletal muscle fibers or the neuromuscular junction. Its effects are greater on polysynaptic pathways. The overall effect of these actions is thought to reduce facilitation of spinal motor neurons.
This medication is used in treatment of muscle spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis, in treatment of muscle spasticity associated with spinal cord disease and treatment of muscle spasticity associated with spinal cord injury.
How to use:
This medication should be taken with a full glass of water. It is a short acting medication, the effects of which are more noticeable between 1 and 6 hours after taking medication. This medication should be taken only for daily activities that require relief from muscle spasticity. Upto three doses in one day are taken if needed. Allow upto 6 to 8 hours to pass between doses.

While taking this medication, care should be taken while driving because it can impair thinking reactions.
Single dose is greater than 8 mg and total daily dose is greater than 24 mg is recommended.
The use of medication is strictly contraindicated in the following cases:
The drug should not be used at a time when muscle tone is needed to assure safe balance and movement for certain activities.
The medication is avoided in Cold or allergic medications, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, other muscle tone like conditions.
Drinking alcohol should be avoided.
The drug that shows interactions with following kind of medications are:
Acyclovir, cimetidine, famotidine, ticlopidine, zileuton, birth control pills, antibiotics such as enoxacin, levoflacacin., blood pressure medications like clonidine, methyldopa etc.
Blood pressure medications such as clonidine, guanfacine, and methyldopa.
Heart rhythm medications like amiodarone, verapamil.
Some of the possible side effects of the medication are:
Feeling light headed, fainting, slow heart rate.
Hallucinations, confusion, unusual thoughts or behavior
Nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urination.
The overdosing of the medication should not be done.In case if overdosing symptoms appear, visit to the nearest hospital immediately.
If you forget to take the dose, it should be taken as soon as get remember. But if the time of next dose has been achieved, the missed dose is skipped and the regular dosing schedule is followed.
This medication should be stored at room temperature. It should be kept away from reach of children and pets.
