Zoloft is an anti-depressant medicine used for the treatment of depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, social phobia, panic disorder, pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Zoloft contains Sertraline that is the main component of this medicine and belongs to the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. They show its effect by inhibiting the uptake of the serotonin into the brain’s nerve cells. Serotonin is the main chemical that is responsible for the control of mood, learning and sleep. Sertraline helps to increase the level of chemicals in the brain and helps to improve the symptoms of anxiety and depression.
When you should not take Zoloft?
Avoid use of Zoloft if you are allergic to Sertraline and any of the ingredients of this medicine.
Avoid use of Zoloft tablet in case you have the problem of epilepsy and are unable to control by any medicine.
Avoid use of Zoloft tablet if you had MAO inhibitor in last 14 days as this combination may result into fits, hypertension and sudden raise in body temperature.
Avoid use of Zoloft along with the drugs like weight loss medicine (phentermine), dietary protein (Tryptophan), drug addiction medicine (Methadone), Migraine (Imigran), expectorant (Dextromethorphan), pain-killer tramadol.
Avoid use of Zoloft for the children under the age of 18years.
Before you take Zoloft
Prior having the medicine discuss with your doctor about any allergy to food, vitamins, and other medicine.
Prior have this medicine discussed it with your health care provider about the disease like mental illness, epilepsy, kidney disorder, seizures, liver disorder, irregular heartbeats, excessive bleeding, diabetes mellitus, glaucoma.
In case of third trimester of pregnancy, use of Zoloft is can harm the child so discuss it with your doctor.
In case of lactation discuss it with the doctor as this medicine can pass through the breast milk.
How much to take Zoloft?
In case of depression for adults- the initial dose is 50mg tablet per day and can be increased up to 200mg per day.
In case of OCD for children - the initial dose is 25mg a day that means half tablet and can be increased up to one complete tablet of 50mg at least after one week.
In case of OCD for adults- the initial dose 50mg tablet per day.
In case of panic disorder for adults- the initial dose is 25mg per day and can be increased up to 50mg per day after one week.
In case of social Phobia- the initial dose is 25mg and can be increased up to 50mg each day.
In case of PMDD- If you are taking all through the menstrual cycle, the initial dose is 50mg tablet in a day and can be increased up to 150mg. and if you are taking in the last 14 days of menstrual cycle, the initial dose is 50mg per day and can be increased maximum up to 100mg in a day.
How to take?
Swallow the whole tablet with a glass of water and take the tablet daily at a same time, preferably in the morning or the evening. You can have it with or without food but follow the same procedure regularly. Take the Zoloft tablet daily for 2-3 weeks.
If you are unable to take Zoloft tablet
Don’t take the double dose to cover up the missed dose. Hop the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule.
If you take excessively much amount of Zoloft tablet
If you feel some of the symptoms of overdose like drowsiness, diarrhoea, irregular heartbeat, vomiting, nausea, tremors, dizziness, agitation, take medical help in case of overdosing.
Tell your doctor if you have problem like dizziness, headache, weakness, shakiness, muscular stiffness, loss of senses, tiredness, dry mouth, hot flashes, excessive sweating, feeling sick, indigestion, diarrhoea, vomiting, sudden change in weight, blurred vision, insomnia, lack of desire for sex, irregular menstrual cycle, urination problem.
Urgent medical help is required in case of nervousness, agitation, abnormal thoughts, anxiety, dizziness, muscular spasm, numbness, tingling, uncontrolled body movement, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, headache, abnormal bleeding, fits, and suicidal thought.
